I'm curious of the likelihood of conceiving twins if twins are present in the family history (more than once), and how family history affects the possibility of having twins. I've heard is skips generations, only transfers on the maternal side, etc. What's the truth? What are your experiences with yourselves, friends, colleges, etc?

I have heard all sorts of wive's tales that are about twins and how they skip generations, etc. like you mentioned. I don't know how much truth is in any of it. My husband has twins on his side of the family but we got lucky and don't have any twins!!

Identical twins is completely incidentally and has nothing to do with a family history of twins. Increased chance of fraternal twins can be passed down genetically and runs on the mother's side.

Oh gosh!!  I hope I'm not pregnant with twins! I love babies but two at a time would be overwhelming to me.  I guess I could manage, but it would certainly be hard.

I would think that there would be an increase in the chance of having twins, if it is present in the family. There is a family in my hometown that has several sets of twins. Two twin brothers married two twin sisters. One couple has one set of twins and the other couple has two sets of twins. Even the other siblings of these parents who are not twins, each have a set of twins of their own. Talk about getting people mixed up at a family reunion!

LaRaesMommy - Wow! That sounds like a crazy family situation! Are all the sets of twins identical?

The one "myth" I have heard most often about twins is that they skip a generation, but I know several people who have twins in their families and it has stopped at the one set.
